Staying Healthy and Active: Activities for Seniors with Limited Mobility

As we age, our bodies start to limit us from doing things that we used to enjoy or normally were able to do, such as playing contact sports, hiking or even jogging. Although some elderly people have remained physically active and mobile, some have limited mobility and often require special attention and even equipment, such as bathroom safety products designed for seniors.

For those whose movements have been limited by old age, there are still plenty of activities they could enjoy that are less physically demanding. Here are some of them:

Playing Games

There is no shortage of fun and challenging games that the elderly can engage in. There are traditional options, such as chess, backgammon, card games, and then board games such as Monopoly. These types of games allow the elderly to have fun and keep their minds sharp, as well as interact and have fun with other people.

Playing digital games on a tablet or computer is also an option. In fact, one pop culture phenomenon that’s recently caught the media’s attention is the “Skyrim Grandma”, an 82-year old who plays a Role-Playing PC Game called “Skyrim” and uploads her video game playthrough and commentary on Youtube. Playing games could keep the mind busy and active, which could help delay or prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s and other memory-related issues.

Tending to Plants

This may sound a bit boring and seems more like a chore, but one can discover the joys of flower arrangement, taking care of potted plants, and other gardening activities. It may be a bit more physically taxing than the other activities on this list, but it’s a relatively light and enjoyable form of exercise that can be done alone or with other people. At the end of the day, you can enjoy the sight (and scent) of a well-maintained garden.

Engaging in Arts, Crafts, and Other Hobbies

It’s been proven that engaging in creative activities or learning new crafts can help with neuroplasticity and keep the mind sharp. Even with limited mobility, it’s easy to take up painting, knitting, cross-stitching or even basket weaving and pottery. You can also revisit or continue old hobbies. If you like to play the guitar and sing in front of a crowd, why not hold a mini-concert once in a while to entertain your guests, families, and friends? There are numerous other creative hobbies and activities out there that you can try out, and it’s never too late to learn new things.

Reading

Senior reading a book
Book reading is a mentally engaging activity; you just need to find the right book and genre for you.

Watching Movies or Series

For those who don’t have the patience to read through a book, there’s always the appeal for motion pictures. There are tons of shows and movies available online that you can choose from and enjoy. But whether you choose reading or watching a movie/series, don’t forget to take a brisk walk once in a while and make sure you get enough exercise each day to keep your mobility from deteriorating.

Aging doesn’t have to mean having less fun. There are plenty of things that the elderly could engage in. Whichever activity you choose, be sure to stay safe and enjoy.
