What to Remember When Colouring Your Hair

Colouring one’s hair to make it have a different colour than what it naturally had is one of the most common things that men and women do to their hair. It changes your looks in an instant. It makes you look refreshed, vibrant, and confident. However, going to the salon and having your hair done and your roots retouched every once in a while can easily put a dent in our wallet. Most hair salons offer expensive hair colouring treatments, which is why people tend to just buy boxed hair colourants and do it themselves at home.

There are certain things that you must remember when colouring your hair at home, though. Today, we will talk about the importance of using luxury products for hairstyling before colouring your hair, as well as some tips to do it right.

Do a Strand Test First

The first thing that you should do is to do a strand test on your hair. Never go all in with any type of product as you might be sensitive to it or you might not want the colour that the dye will give you. To do a strand test, get a small section of your hair, apply a little bit of dye to it, leave it on for about 20 to 30 minutes, and then rinse it with lukewarm or cool water. If you like the colour that it turns out to be and you are not experiencing any adverse allergic reactions, then go ahead and dye your hair with it.

Prepare Two Boxes for Longer Hair

You would not want to run out of hair dye and botch your DIY hair project, would you? If your hair is long and runs past your shoulders, then you should go ahead and grab two boxes of hair dye instead of one. You definitely would want to distribute the colour evenly throughout your hair strands. It is important to be on the safe side and shop for two boxes if you have longer hair.

Determine Your Hair Texture

If your hair has a coarse, frizzy, and curly texture to it, then chances are that the dye will cling to it more and will have a cooler undertone when you apply the dye to it. However, fine and straight hair will create a warm or reddish undertone when coloured. If you have frizzy and curly hair, make sure to go for warm-toned colours such as bronze or gold and a little bit lighter than your natural hair colour. If you are trying to dye straight and fine hair, opt for cool-toned shades such as ash blonde or beige and a little bit darker than your hair colour to get the colour that you desire.

Apply Some Oil or Conditioner to Your Ends

When touching up your roots, make sure to apply a little bit of oil or conditioner to the ends of your hair before rinsing it out. You would not want to stain the rest of your hair and have it appear darker or lighter than your roots. Make sure to keep it from staining by applying a little bit of hair oil or conditioner to it so that the colour will just glide through it when you are rinsing it off.

If you are unsure about the whole process, then you should go to your trusted salon. This is the safest route to take. While you are at it, ask your hairstylist some questions to get some tips for your next DIY hair project.
